CHATTOGRAM, Feb 4, 2026 (BSS) - Chattogram City Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain today said the city would be freed from chronic waterlogging through systematic excavation and restoration of canals to ensure natural water flow.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the Kali Chhara canal excavation programme at the Khulshi Lake City residential area.
The mayor said the initiative aims to revive the city's natural drainage system, recalling that a similar programme had been undertaken during the tenure of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.
Dr Shahadat noted that water drainage in Chattogram has been severely disrupted over the years due to canal encroachment, illegal filling and unplanned construction, resulting in recurring waterlogging.
He said simultaneous drives are underway to remove encroachments and carry out regular canal digging, adding that waterlogging remains one of the most pressing problems for the port city, particularly during the monsoon.
Areas such as Faridar Para, Bahaddarhat, Chandgaon, Baklia and Muradpur frequently go under water during heavy rains, he said, adding that the City Corporation is working to restore canals, clean drains and maintain natural water flow routes to address the problem.
Emphasising the importance of natural canals in draining rainwater, the mayor said proper restoration would significantly reduce waterlogging. He added that the excavation of the Kali Chhara canal is part of a phased plan to clean and excavate all major canals in the city.
Legal action is being taken against canal encroachers, while strict monitoring is in place to prevent future encroachment, he said.
Chief Conservancy Officer of Chattogram City Corporation Captain Ikhtiar Uddin Chowdhury presided over the function.
Among others, Malaria and Mosquito Control Officer Sharful Islam Mahi, Deputy Chief Sanitation Officer Pranab Sharma, Mayor's Advisor on Waterlogging Relief Shahriar Khaled, and Executive Engineers Anu Mia and Abu Taher were present.
