RANGPUR, Aug 30, 2026 (BSS) - A Detective Branch (DB) team of Rangpur Metropolitan Police has collected urine samples from Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das, two accused in the sensational quadruple murder case, for dope tests.

A DB team, accompanied by a technologist and an assistant from the Rangpur Medical College (RpMC) laboratory, went to Rangpur Central Jail at around 1:15pm on Sunday to collect the samples.

The police had earlier sought the assistance of the RpMC principal to ensure the safe collection of the samples inside the jail, as bringing the accused outside the prison posed security risks.

Confirming the matter, case investigation officer and DB officer-in-charge Inspector Md Jinnat Ali said the samples were collected after a court approved the police's application for the dope tests.

"For security reasons, it was not possible to bring the accused out of the jail. So, RpMC lab technologists were taken there to collect the samples," he said.

RpMC technologist Mohammad Ashraf Ali said urine specimens from both accused were collected and would be sent to a laboratory for testing.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DB) Sanatan Chakraborty said the case was highly sensitive as four members of the same family were brutally murdered.

He said there was a risk of the accused being attacked or a mob gathering if they were brought outside the jail, prompting police to arrange for the samples to be collected inside the prison.

On the night of August 22, DB police recovered the bodies of retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife, daughter and son from their locked house in the Machhuapara area of Rangpur city.

Ganapati's elder brother, Gopinath Chakraborty, later filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station.

Police subsequently arrested the deceased's neighbours, Mugdha Das, 23, and Siddhartha Das, 19, in connection with the murders.

The two accused later gave confessional statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before Rangpur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rafiqul Islam.
