DHAKA, March 22, 204 (BSS)-Bangladesh made a tremendous start to the two-match Test series opener, thanks to fast bowler Syed Khaled Ahmed who produced a brilliant bowling work to put the side on top at lunch on day one today at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
The fast bowler claimed 3-23 to help Bangladesh reduce Sri Lanka to a precarious 92-5 at the first interval of the day, making sure the side would go to the lunch with a strong upper-hand of the match.
Khaled struck in the second over of the day after Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto put into bat first.
He had Nishan Madushka caught by Mehidy Hasan Miraz at third slip with a fuller delivery that swung slightly.
Kusal Mendis and experienced Dimuth Karunaratne appeared to steady the innings with Mendis completing his 4000 runs when he hit pacer Shoriful Islam for a boundary through fine-leg.
But Khaled undid him with an extra bounce which Mendis (16) pulled straight to gully where Zakir Hasan complete an easy catch.
Four balls later, Khaled rattled the stump of Karunarate for 17 with raw pace to leave Sri Lanka at 41-3 in 12th over.
The situation was further worsened when Angelo Mathews was run out for 5 and Shoriful Islam dismissed Dinesh Chandimal (9) with a back of length delivery.
With the side at 57-5, captain Dhananjaya de Silva resisted as he played his shots confidently to keep the scoreboard going and was not out on 25 off 24 with four fours at the first interval of the day.
Kamindu Mendis assisted him in steadying innings, batting on 11.
