CHATTOGRAM, Sept 27, 2025 (BSS) - Saddam Hossain, the reliable custodian of Dhaka-based Arambagh Krira Sangha and a familiar face in the national football circuit, has emerged as one of Bangladesh's most determined and resilient goalkeepers.
With a dream to don the national team jersey, Saddam's journey from a remote village in Rangunia upazila of Chattogram to the competitive grounds of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) stands as a testament to grit, talent and unwavering spirit.
Coming from a modest background, Saddam received immense encouragement from his family, especially his elder brother, to pursue his passion for football. Despite completing his SSC from Pomra High School, Saddam chose to forgo his academic path and dedicate himself fully to the sport.
His talent was first spotted at the grassroots level by senior Rangunia footballers Sabur and goalkeeper Selim, who helped him secure a spot in 2007 with Pratasha Sporting, one of the leading teams in the Pioneer League of Chattogram.
His standout performances earned him a place in the Dhaka Pioneer League in 2010. That same year, he began playing in the Dhaka First Division League for Khilgaon Jagrani Sangsad.
Talking to BSS, Saddam recalled his transition to top-tier football. He was recruited by Feni Soccer Club in the 2011-2012 season, followed by a significant stint with Saif Sporting Club in 2016, competing in the Bangladesh Championship League.
His performances continued to rise in stature and in 2017, Saddam was called up to represent both the U-19 and U-23 national teams after his notable displays in the BPL.
However, his upward course faced a major hurdle when he suffered a serious leg injury during a training session with Saif Sporting Club, an incident that dashed his immediate hopes of national team selection. But Saddam's resolve remained unshaken. He staged a remarkable comeback in the 2018 BPL season, turning in stellar performances for Farashganj Sporting Club.
His perseverance and consistent form eventually led him to Arambagh Krira Sangha, where he now serves as a key figure between the posts. Saddam credits former national team captain and fellow Rangunia native Arman Aziz for mentoring and opening doors for him in the Dhaka football scene.
Harun Al Rashid, General Secretary of the Rangunia Upazila Sports Association, praised Saddam's determination, saying, "Today's Saddam is not just a footballer; he is an inspiration for the country's youth. His journey reflects how one can overcome adversity and chase their dreams with courage and commitment."
Despite facing a career-threatening injury, Saddam Hossain has not only returned to form but continues to grow stronger. As he guards the goalposts for Arambagh Krira Sangha, his eyes remain fixed on achieving the ultimate dream -- representing Bangladesh at the senior national level.
