DHAKA, April 16, 2026 (BSS) - Mehidy Hasan has set his sights on guiding
Bangladesh to direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup after being
handed long-term captaincy, a move aimed at ensuring stability and strategic
planning within the team.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has recently extended Miraz's tenure as
ODI captain through to the 2027 World Cup, fulfilling the all-rounder's
desire for sustained leadership ahead of the crucial global tournament.
Bangladesh's direct entry into the World Cup remains uncertain, with the team
currently ranked ninth in the ODI standings. Only the top eight teams, along
with hosts, will qualify automatically, making every bilateral series crucial
in the next two years roadmap.
Miraz begins his extended leadership tenure with the ODI series against New
Zealand national cricket team, expressing confidence in his team's recent
form following successive series wins over the West Indies and Pakistan.
"The 2027 World Cup is a long-term process. We have to go step by step,
playing well in each series," Miraz said at a pre-match press conference on
Thursday.
He stressed that long-term captaincy would allow him to build stronger team
cohesion and plan effectively according to conditions and opposition.
"If a captain gets time, it becomes easier to organize the team, plan
combinations and keep players mentally free. This is a positive aspect for
us," he added.
Despite the confidence boost from recent performances, the challenge remains
significant. Bangladesh, with 79 rating points, trail behind eighth-placed
teams and face pressure from teams below, including West Indies.
Miraz, however, remains focused on immediate goals, underlining the
importance of a strong start against New Zealand in the three-match series.
"The first match is very important. A good start can help us carry momentum
through the series," he said.
