Manikganj farmers eye bumper onion production

MANIKGANJ, March 18, 2025 (BSS) - Farmers of Manikganj district are expecting a bumper production of onion during this season as cultivation target has been exceeded. 

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) had set a target to cultivate onions on 7,035 hectares of land with a production target of 1,17,062 tonnes of onion during the current season in all seven upazilas of the district. However, onions were cultivated on 7,564 hectares exceeding its fixed target by 529 hectares. 

The upazilas with the highest onion cultivation are Harirampur, Ghior, and Shibalaya.

Ahmed Ali, 51, an onion cultivator from the village of Maluchi under Shibalaya upazila, said, "We are hoping a bumper production this season as we received quality seeds, fertilizers, and other agricultural inputs at the right time."

He added that the favorable climatic conditions for onions were prevailing over the district.

Dr. Robiah Noor Ahmed, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), said that the land in the three upazilas-Harirampur, Shibalaya, and Ghior-is suitable for onion cultivation. 

He added that most of the onions from these areas are sent to various markets across the country, including Dhaka, throughout the year.
