SYLHET, April 22, 2025 (BSS) - About 45 percent Boro paddy of the haor areas of the district has already been harvested by the farmers.
Officials of the Department of Agricultural Extension said here today that the farmers so far harvested Boro paddy from 124,805 hectares out of 276,903 hectares of land.
Additional Director of the DAE Sylhet region Bimal Chandra Som told BSS that the harvesting of Boro paddy has got momentum in the region, and the DAE has instructed the farmers to harvest the paddy, of which 80 percent has already ripened.
Over four lakh farmers have been engaged in paddy cutting in the region, defying rain and thunderstruck.
The officials said the harvesting is going on in full swing due to the supply of a huge number of combined harvesting machines, they said.
Most of the paddy in the haor areas could be harvested within a week if there is no excessive rain or flood, they added.
According to the DAE statistics, Boro paddy was cultivated over 407,219 hectares of land in the region, surpassing the target of the department.
The farmers in the non-haor areas have also started harvesting their Boro paddy, and they harvested paddy from only 9.21 hectares of land. The farmers of the non-haor areas have harvested their crops from 20,017 hectares of land out of 220,416 hectares, the DAE sources said, adding that the percentage of harvesting is only 29.13 percent.
The farmers of the haor areas have been instructed to harvest their crops hurriedly, as heavy rainfall and floods may damage their ripe crops, the officials said.
Mostafa Kamal Azad, a training officer of the agriculture department of Sunamganj, told BSS that nearly 150,000 farmers have been harvesting Boro paddy with nearly 700 combined harvesting machines in the region.
