SUNAMGANJ, April 25, 2025 (BSS)- The Department of Agricultural Extension
(DAE) has informed that around 57.62 percent of Boro paddy harvesting in haor
areas while 13.33 percent paddy of the non-haor areas of the district has
already been completed.
There are 137 haors of different sizes in the district, said Mostafa Iqbal
Azad, acting deputy director of the DAE, Sunamganj.
"Till last Thursday, farmers of the district harvested paddy on a total of
102,970 hectares of land. The harvesting of Boro paddy in the haor areas is
expected to be completed within the next 10 days while the non-haor areas
will be finished by May 25," he said.
The farmers of the district have cultivated the paddy on 2, 23,502 hectares
of land across the district of which 1,65,243 hectares of land are in the
haor areas while 58,259 hectares are in non-haor areas, the DAE official
added.
This year, the DAE had fixed a target to produce 1,396,080 metric tons of
paddy across the district. However, the farmers are hoping to exceed the
target.
The DAE has already distributed 1,024 combined harvesting machines at a
subsidized price to the farmers. The farmers have been using a total of 908
combine harvesting machines and over 116 reaper machines were also brought to
the haor areas for cutting the crops.
However, a total of 172,350 laborers are currently engaged in harvesting Boro
paddy in the district. Among them, 166,983 are local workers, while 5,367
laborers come from various adjacent districts.
The Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj district Dr. Mohammad Iliyas Mia told
BSS that if the weather remains favorable, the harvesting of Boro paddy in
the haor and non-haor areas of the district will be completed by the end of
April.
