LALMONIRHAT, May 3, 2025 (BSS) – Bumper productions of maize and its fair prices have brought smiles on the faces of farmers in the district.

Farmers are expecting a bumper yield of maize across the district this season due to favorable weather, use of modern agricultural technology and government support.

Maize farming brings a smile to farmers' faces in the district as they are becoming financially solvent by cultivating the crop, meeting its growing demand.

A field visit shows that maize is being cultivated extensively in the vast areas of Teesta char region, in addition to the five upazilas of the district.

Farmers are showing their interest in cultivating this crop as the cost of maize cultivation is comparatively low, the yield is high and both the demand and price in the market are good.

Especially since maize is widely used in making cattle feed, there is a demand for it throughout the year.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) this year, maize has been cultivated on 39,955 hectares of land in the district.

The production target has been set at 446,855 metric tons.

Osman Gani, 52, a farmer of Mahendranagar union, said, “This time I cultivated maize on one acre of land. I spent Taka 15-18 thousand per bigha of land. Maize is being sold at Taka 1100 per maund in the market, so it is possible to make a profit of Taka 18-20 thousand from per bigha of land.”

Alamgir Mia, 45, a farmer from the Teesta River, said, “Everything of the maize plant is useful. The leaves are used as fodder for cattle, and the stalks and husks are used as firewood. If the price and demand are good, I will cultivate maize on more land next year.”

Abdul Hakim, 55, a farmer from Barabari union, said, “Since corn cultivation is profitable, I have cultivated corn on one and a half bighas of land this time too. I hope that I will get a good yield as well as a good price.”

Agriculture officer Khandaker Sohael Ahmed said maize is a profitable crop and an alternative to tobacco. Farmers are being encouraged to use modern technology and we are ready to help them in maize cultivation.

Deputy Director of DAE Dr. Md. Saikhul Arifin said maize has now become an important and profitable cash crop in Lalmonirhat. The Agriculture Department is providing all-out support to the farmers to further encourage them and maintain their success.
