DINAJPUR, May 4, 2025 (BSS) - Farmers and agriculturists are expecting a
bumper litchi production in the district this year and the juicy fruit hit
the market in a few days.
The district is widely known across the country for its delicious litchi.
Ripe fruits are hanging beautifully on the litchi orchards of the district
and the red-pink tossed litchi will hit the market in a few days.
Talking to several litchi farmers in Dinajpur Sadar upazila, they are
expecting a good litchi production this year as the weather has been
favorable so far.
The fruits of the indigenous varieties of Madraji and Bombay litchi have been
as expected this time. However, the yield of the traditional Dinajpur Bedana
litchi is much better this year than the past two years.
Deputy Director of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Md. Zafar Iqbal
said there are 9,098 litchi gardens in the district on 5,520 hectares of
land.
This time the target of litchi production has been set at 34,628 metric tons.
The largest number of gardens-- on 3,223 hectares of land-- in the district
is Bombay litchi.
In addition, Madraji is on 1,117 hectares, China-3 on 805 hectares, Bedana on
318 hectares, kathali on 56 hectares and Mozaffari litchi gardens on one
hectare of land.
There are almost lakhs of litchi trees in the gardens including the
courtyards of houses.
Visiting various litchi gardens in the district, it can be seen that farmers
are busy spending time in the last stages of care of the trees and fruits.
Pesticides are being sprayed with long pipes.
As the district received 130 mm of rainfall in the last 15 days, the need for
irrigation at the crucial time of litchi has been reduced.
Farmers said that there is a possibility of bumper litchi yield due to the
favorable weather so far.
Litchi farmer Md. Amjad Ali of Nashipur village in Sadar upazila, was
spraying pesticides in his litchi garden to control insects.
He said that he has a garden of 120 seedless litchi trees on one acre of
land. He estimated that he will be able to get up to 3,500 pieces of litchi
on each tree this time.
Litchi farmer Golam Hossain of Sikderhat village in Sadar Upazila said he has
three litchi gardens on 3.5 acres of land. One of them is a Bedena litchi and
the other two are mixed Bedena, Madraji, Bombay and Kathali varieties of
litchi trees, he added.
Assistant Director of Horticulture Department, Dinajpur Agriculturist Md.
Faizur Rahman, who is engaged in research on litchi fruits, said Bedena and
Kathali litchi will be available in the local markets at the end of Baishakh
and buyers will be able to buy those easily.
There has been a bumper production of the two early varieties of litchi in
the district, he added.
After that, traditional Bedena and Madraji litchi will be available in
Dinajpur markets in the first week of the month of Jyeshtha, commonly known
as Madhumas.
The Ministry of Commerce has held several rounds of discussions with the
Horticulture Department to export litchi outside the country, the
agriculturist continued.
The Dinajpur Horticulture Department has talked to the owners of quality
litchi gardens to export litchi outside the country as per the instructions
of the Ministry of Commerce.
