MYMENSINGH, Jan 15, 2026 (BSS)– The Department of Fisheries (DoF) today organised a views exchange meeting  to curb the unnecessary use of antibiotics in the fisheries sector and ensure safe fish production.

The meeting was held at the auditorium of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) in the city.

Director General of the Department of Fisheries Dr Md Abdur Rouf attended as chief guest with Director of the DoF Mymensingh Division Nripendra Nath Biswas in the chair.

Speakers said the use of antibiotics in fish farming without expert’s advice may bring short-term benefits but poses serious long-term risks, including antibiotic resistance, threats to public health, food safety and the environment.

They noted that excessive use of antibiotics is more common among new and inexperienced fish farmers and is often encouraged by some pharmaceutical representatives and local feed traders.

The meeting emphasised stopping the sale and use of antibiotics without expert guidance and called for strict monitoring.

Fisheries officials, fish farmers and other stakeholders attended the meeting.
