RAJSHAHI, Feb 15, 2026 (BSS) - As the winter season ends, tens of thousands of mango trees have started flowering in the Rajshahi region, famous nationwide for its delicious mango production.

Farmers in the region are dreaming of a good harvest as mango orchards are filling up with blossoms. Abundant buds in the early stage predict excellent production, provided climatic conditions remain favourable until harvest.

Mango cultivators said early buds have started appearing on the trees, swaying like green leaves in the cool breeze of Magh (Bengla month). They have taken primary care of the trees before the buds appear.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Rajshahi, mangoes were cultivated on 19,603 hectares of land in the 2024-25 fiscal year, producing 249,952 metric tons. For the 2025-26 fiscal year, the cultivation target has again been set at 19,603 hectares, with a production target of 246,000 metric tons.

A notable abundance of early blossoms has been observed in Bagha, Charghat, and Puthia upazilas in Rajshahi. Farmers sprayed the necessary pesticides to protect the buds from diseases as per the advice of the local agriculture department.

They said that if the weather remains favourable, they are expecting a bumper yield of early mangoes.

Muzaffar Hossain, a mango farmer from Kaluhati village of Charghat upazila, said this time, the buds appeared earlier in the garden. If the buds are not damaged in the fog, there will be a massive mango harvest.

Mahfuz Ali, a mango farmer from the Charghat area, said that because he takes care of his trees throughout the year, he gets good yields.

"I am taking care of my trees this year as well. Blossoms have already appeared on one or two trees. However, if hoppers or sucking insects are not controlled in time, mango production may decline," he added.

Dr Shafiqul Islam, Chief Scientific Officer of Rajshahi Fruit Research Center, said, "This time, buds have come quite early. Some trees have started to bud now. However, it will take more time to understand how many buds will come. Hopefully, this time there will be more buds than last year."

He also said that farmers are being instructed to spray garden care drugs. And farmers are also working accordingly in the hope of higher yields.

Dr Shafiqul Islam further added that the production target is expected to be met if there is no significant damage from fog.

New mango orchards, especially of Amrapali and BARI Mango-3 and 4 varieties, are increasing rapidly in the districts every year.

Naogaon was long known for paddy cultivation, but last year it became the highest mango-producing district, surpassing the mango capital of Chapainawabganj.

Dr Islam said Chapainawabganj still has the highest amount of land covered by mango orchards, but Naogaon saw a one-and-a-half-fold increase in its mango farm acreage annually over the last 10 years, according to DAE data.

The area covered by mango orchards in Naogaon increased by 14,925 hectares in the period while the increase was 9,520 hectares in Chapainawabganj.

Mango farming is not only increasing, but it is changing as well. Instead of creating mango orchards for a hundred years or more, farmers are targeting only 10 years.
