DHAKA, Nov 26, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Bank (BB) has tightened the experience requirements for appointing managing directors (MD) or chief executive officers (CEO) in banks, emphasizing the need for greater senior-level expertise in these roles.

The new rules, set forth in a circular issued today by the central bank's Banking Regulation and Policy Department, stipulate that candidates must now have a total of three years of combined or individual experience as an additional managing director (AMD) and/or a deputy managing director (DMD) to qualify for the MD position.

This updated guideline represents a significant change from the previous requirements.

Earlier mandates required two years of experience in the immediate past position, but they did not specifically require experience in the AMD or DMD roles. The new circular makes experience in the AMD and DMD roles mandatory.

In addition to the specific senior banking role requirements, the circular outlined an alternative pathway for MD nomination. Individuals may also be nominated for the MD role if they possess at least 25 years of experience in first-class or equivalent senior positions in regulatory bodies related to the banking and financial sector. This alternative also requires experience serving in the national pay scale’s Grade-2.
