Collaborative efforts crucial to protect consumers' rights

RAJSHAHI, March 19, 2025 (BSS) - Speakers at a meeting viewed that integrated efforts of all the government and non-government organizations concerned can be the best way of protecting consumers’ rights.

Simultaneously, enforcement of the Consumers’ Rights Protection Law has become an urgent need for ensuring safe food and protecting public health from various non-communicable diseases.

Many people are being infected by deadly diseases like cancer, liver cirrhosis, hepatitis and cardiac and kidney ailments through consumption of adulterated foods, so there is no way but to resist producing, possessing and selling contaminated foods.

Administrative officials and members of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) made the observation while addressing the meeting here today.

CAB organized the meeting titled "Consumers Rights and Economic Development of the country" at the office conference hall of Divisional Commissioner.

Divisional Commissioner Khandaker Azim Ahmed addressed the meeting as the chief guest with CAB Vice-President Mijanur Rahman in the chair.

Additional Commissioner Rejaul Alam Sarker, Deputy Director of the Department of National Consumers Rights Protection (DNCRP) Ibrahim Hossain and President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Masudur Rahman also spoke on the occasion.

Cab local unit General Secretary Golam Mostofa moderated the discussion.

In his keynote presentation, CAB Organizing Secretary Prof Dr Syed Mijanur Rahman talked about the importance of consumer rights protection.

Commissioner Khandaker Azim Ahmed mentioned that the issue of the consumers' rights is well accepted throughout the world and in the free market economy. So, awareness should be created among the businessmen and other concerns.

In the present context, ensuring reasonable prices of essential commodities and their supply to the buyer, protecting the interest of the e-commerce customer has emerged as a challenge that needs to be faced collectively.

The consumer should have the right to know about the quality of the commodities that they want to buy and they should also be able to buy them at the reasonable prices.

In his speech, Ibrahim Hossain attributed that the activities of DNCRP has been gaining popularity as many of the consumers are being benefited after availing services of the organization.

He told the meeting that they had played a vital role in mitigating the price hike of various essential commodities as per direction of the government.
