8 businesses fined for violating environmental laws in Munshiganj

MUNSHIGANJ, Mar 19, 2025 (BSS) - A mobile court of the Department of Environment has fined a total of Taka 10 lakh to one cold storage and seven sawmills for violating environmental laws and operating without environmental clearance.

The mobile court, led by Special Magistrate for the Environment and Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahidul Islam, conducted the drive in the Baligaon Bazar area under Tongibari upazila from 2 pm to 5:30 pm yesterday and realized the fines.

During the drive, Sunflower Cold Storage was fined Taka three lakh for not having clearance from the DoE, while seven sawmills were fined Taka one lakh each for breaching environmental laws.

The sawmills are Mamun Sawmill, Bangladesh Timber and Sawmill, M/S Allaher Dan Timber and Sawmill, M/S Ashraf Ali Timber and Sawmill, Siddiqur Rahman Timber and Sawmill, Raju Timber and Sawmill, and M/S Popular Timber and Sawmill.

Deputy Director and Senior Chemist of the DoE Md Sanwar Hossain, along with police personnel, were present during the drive.
