Steps taken to harvest haor paddy before flash flood

SUNAMGANJ, April 06, 2025 (BSS) – Aimed at protecting this year’s yields from any possible flash flood, local administration has taken preparation to help the farmers to harvest their paddy by this month.

Local administration has taken preparation to harvest the paddy of haor area by April 30. In view of this paddy cutting festival will be observed on Pahela Baishakh in the district.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Mohammad Ilias Miah in a views exchange meeting today said as many as 950 combined harvesters and 172 reaper machines were kept ready for harvesting boro paddy from haors.

Adviser of the Ministry of Agriculture Jahangir Alam Chowdhury was invited to festival, the DC said.

More than 150,000 workers will join the paddy harvesting programme while sand and stone mahals will remain closed from April 15 to April 25 to facilitate workers to join the festival, he added.

The DC said, If the weather is favourable, it will be possible to harvest the boro crops of all haors and bring them to the farmers' godowns by April 30. 

All Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) were asked to take preparation to make the paddy harvesting successful. 

Mustafa Iqbal Azad, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension, presented various information related to harvesting and threshing of boro paddy.

He said that this year, boro rice has been cultivated on 223,502 hectares of land. Out of those, hybrid rice has been cultivated on 67,550 hectares, high-yielding (Ufshi) rice on 154,982 hectares and local variety of rice on 970 hectares.

The rice production has been estimated to 13,96,080 metric tons, worth about Taka 4,500 crore. 

Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board Emdadul Haque said WDB has taken completed crop protection works in 53 haors in 12 upazilas.

Local distinguished people, journalists and senior officials attended the views exchange meeting.
