DHAKA, Aug 26, 2025 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Consulate General in New York has sent letters to the local police, the Mayor's office, and the US State Department's regional office requesting legal action against Awami League miscreants involved in Sunday's incident.

"Still images and video footage of their disgraceful acts have already been handed over to the police as evidence, and the authorities have assured that proper legal measures will be taken," the mission said in a statement today. 

On August 24, a discussion meeting was held at the Consulate General to mark the first anniversary of the July-August Uprising Day. Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuz Alam attended the programme as the chief guest, while around 150 guests, including Bangladeshi students and members of the expatriate community, were present. 

The statement clarified that for overall preparation and security reasons, the Consulate had requested assistance from the New York City Police, which deployed a sufficient number of officers around the venue prior to the event. 

According to the mission, the leaders and activists of the Awami League USA branch and its affiliates gathered in front of the Consulate from 5 pm with a "violent intent to disrupt the discussion and attack the chief guest," the statement said. 

They chanted anti-government slogans, used obscene and abusive language, chased invited guests, and obstructed them from entering the programme. 

Over time, they engaged in further mischief, including throwing eggs at guests and, in a heinous act, struck the glass door of another office (in the same building adjacent to the Consulate's entrance), causing it to crack.  

Police intervened promptly, stopped the destructive attempts, and detained several individuals.

The statement added that accomplices of the fallen fascist regime, carrying Awami League party flags, staged a sit-in around the Consulate General until midnight with the intention of harassing or even endangering the life of the chief guest.

However, it noted that police presence remained visible throughout to ensure security.

The Consulate confirmed that the Chief Guest entered the premises on time through the designated route, attended the programme without any hindrance, exchanged views with guests, and joined them for dinner. 

Later, he departed safely in his designated vehicle without any incident, after which police also left the venue. 

"It is also important to mention that during the chief guest's arrival at and departure from the venue, there was no encounter, connection, or interaction whatsoever with the miscreants," the statement said. 

The mission further observed that despite relentless efforts, the accomplices of the fallen fascist regime utterly failed to achieve their ill motives and, frustrated by their failure, are now spreading misinformation and propaganda across social media and other digital platforms. 

It urged all not to be misled by such false information and propaganda.
