RAJSHAHI, April 7, 2025 (BSS) - Three men were killed and around 50 others injured when two buses collided head-on with a drum-truck at the Kharkhari area on Rajshahi-Dhaka highway under Matihar Police Station in the city last night.
Police and hospital sources said the deceased were identified as Jewel Ahmed, 40, son of Sadiqul Islam, Nasim Uddin, 45, son of Belayet Hossain, and Mijanur Rahman, 32, son of Jobdul Haqaue. They were residents of Ghorapakhia village under Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila.
Forty of the injured persons were rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) and were undergoing treatment there at the time of filing this report.
Quoting witnesses, Ariful Islam, Team Leader of Rajshahi University Fire Service Unit, told BSS that two buses with around 90 passengers from the Ghorapakhia village were heading to Pirojpur to offer fateha at the grave of late Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi.
The front bus first collided head-on with a drum-truck around 1.30am and the bus skidded off the road. It overturned and fell into a roadside ditch. Subsequently, the truck also hit the rear bus and damaged it badly.
Police and local people recovered the injured people and transported them to RMCH immediately.
RMCH Emergency Medical Officer Dr Sanker Kumar Biswash told BSS that 43 injured people were admitted to the hospital and three of them succumbed to their injuries shortly after admission.
Some were released after receiving first aid, he added.
