“The deceased was identified as Mahim, 14, son of Lutfar Rahman of Maddhyapara village under Sadar union of the same upazila,” Gangachara Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Al Emran told BSS tonight.

He was studying at Chengmari High School in the nearby area.

Quoting locals, the OC said that Mahim went to play football with his friends on the Teesta riverbank in the afternoon without informing his parents at home.

After playing football, many of them took a bath in the river.

However, even after everyone returned from bathing, Mahim's friends could not find him. Mahim did not know how to swim.

Later, after a search with the help of locals, Mahim was rescued from the water in an unconscious state.

He was rushed to the Gangachara Upazila Health Complex where the doctor declared him dead.

“No complaint has been received from the family in this incident. However, an unnatural death case has been registered the police station,” the OC added.
