CHANDPUR, April 8, 2025 (BSS) - With the theme 'If Jatka fishing stops, Hilsa will rise in nets', Jatka Conservation Week began today with the aim of boosting Hilsa production by preventing the capture of immature hilsa (jatka).

On the occasion, a discussion meeting and a boat rally were held at Nilkamal Char in Haimchar upazila, Jatka Sanctuary area of the district, this afternoon.

Local administration, public representatives, fishermen and businessmen participated in the rally.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin Uddin was present as the chief guest at the discussion meeting and boat rally.

District Police Superintendent Muhammad Abdur Rakib, Naval Police Chandpur Region Police Superintendent Syed Moshfiqur Rahman, District Fisheries Officer Md. Golam Mehedi Hasan, Coast Guard Station Commander M Fazlul Haque, and Haimchar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Umme Salma Nazneen Trisha were present.

Fisheries Department said that Jatka fish is a small size measuring 10 inches or 25 centimeters. Hilsa weighing one kilogram is at least 40-50 centimeters and if it is more than 2 kilograms, it will be 60-62 centimeters. If the conservation week is successful, these Jatka will be converted into Hilsa.
