KHULNA, July 21, 2025 (BSS) - Three individuals have been arrested and sent to jail in Khulna for their involvement in a plot to create unrest and sabotage infrastructure in the city, police said on Monday.
The arrestees - Ibrahim Gazi, 20, of Nirala Sofeda Tola, Dinar Hossain Rony, 44, of Tutpara Aman Mohalla and Miraj Majhi, 42, from Besorgati village in Bagerhat Sadar upazila - were detained on Sunday from areas near Collegiate School and Boyra Pujakhola.
Following their arrests, a local court ordered all three to be sent to jail.
Police seized one motorcycle, nine old tires, and two bottles of petrol from the scenes.
The individuals were allegedly preparing to set up road blockades, vandalize infrastructure, and disrupt communications by setting fire to tires, said the police.
Two separate cases have been filed in connection with the incident - one at Khulna Police Station and another at Sonadanga Model Police Station - under the Special Powers Act. The cases name 50 accused individuals, including several high-profile political and community figures.
Among those named are Sheikh Jewel, former Member of Parliament from Khulna-2, Sheikh Sohel, former director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Advocate Saiful Islam, former president of the Khulna District Bar Association and Z. A. Mahmud Don, former Ward-24 councilor.
Police received intelligence about a group of individuals including several Awami League leaders gathering in front of Collegiate Girls School and Boyra Pujakhola to plan acts of sabotage and incite public disorder, said Khondokar Hossain Ahmad, Assistant Commissioner (Media) of Khulna Metropolitan Police.
"Upon reaching the locations early Sunday, most of the suspects fled the scene, abandoning materials intended for arson," he said.
Police said the arrested individuals confessed during initial interrogation that they were acting under instructions from the named senior fascist Awami League leaders to carry out the sabotage.
