Eight arrested over clashes at CU

CHATTOGRAM, Sept 3, 2025 (BSS) - Hathazari Thana police arrested eight people today in connection with the two-day violent clashes between Chattogram University (CU) students and villagers near the campus on Saturday and Sunday.

Officer-in-Charge of Hathazari Model Police Station Kaiser Hossain said a special operation was conducted between 10 pm yesterday and 12 pm today, during which eight people were arrested.

The arrestees were sent to jail, he said, adding that efforts to detain other suspects are underway.

The arrested are Md Imran Hossain, 35, Hasan, 22, Russel alias Kalo Russel, 30, Md Alamgir, 35, Md Nazrul Islam, 30, Md Zahed, 30, Md Arman, 24, and Md Didarul Alam, 46.

On Tuesday, the university's security department chief Abdur Rahim filed a case against 1,095 people.
According to the case statement, the conflict began between students and residents of Jobra village following a female student's altercation with a gatekeeper.

The student was trying to enter her rented apartment near the campus late at night, but the gatekeeper refused her entry, citing the late hour.

The situation escalated when the female student was allegedly slapped by the guard, sparking a large-scale confrontation. Clashes took place from 12 pm to 4 pm on Saturday and from 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday.
