DHAKA, May 01, 2026 (BSS)- BNP Secretary General and LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said country's working class has been suffering from negligence and deprivation for long. Effective initiatives must be taken to protect their rights, he said.

Fakhrul Islam said while addressing a rally organized by the Jatiyotabdi Sramik Dal on the occasion of the great May Day today in front of the central party office of the party at Nayapaltan in the city.

"Today, the country has started to rise up from the rubbles under the leadership of Tarique Rahman. Our agriculture was destroyed, industry was destroyed, the banking sector was destroyed,” he said adding that the working class is most deprived and affected.

“Despite being deprived from their rights the working class people were in the forefront to make any sacrifice for any change. May Day is also reddened by their blood," Fakhrul said.

BNP secretary general recalled that on December 7, 2022 they were not allowed to hold a rally in front of the office.

“Police obstructed us and launched a sudden attack when a workshop worker Mokbul murdered,” he said adding “countless workers have lost their lives in during the anti-fascist movement."

He expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for his announcement to rehabilitate the hawkers saying “We were extremely delighted because these people were the front-line soldiers of our movement.”

Fakhrul Islam also requested the Prime Minister to consider the matter of minimum wages for workers, ensure their children’s access to education and healthcare.

BNP secretary general said the government should take measures to improve living standard of the tea garden workers.
