SYLHET, Oct 4, 2025 (BSS) – Police have arrested Kazi Abdul Alfu Miah, Chairman of Telikhal Union Parishad and a key accused in the case filed over the looting of large-scale white stone from ‘Sada Pathor’ area in Sylhet's Companiganj upazila.
Alfu, who also serves as vice-president of the upazila unit of the Awami League, is an accused in seven cases, including three murder cases.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Companiganj Police Station Ratan Sheikh confirmed the arrest, saying, “Police detained Alfu from his residence around 4:30pm today. Following the arrest, police launched a special drive with him.”
According to police sources, Alfu was listed among the prime accused in four separate cases filed recently over illegal extraction of stones and sand from the ‘Sada Pathor’ and Railway Bunker areas and other nearby locations.
OC Ratan Sheikh said that Alfu had been absconding for a long time, and police managed to arrest him recently on a tip-off. He further said that others involved in the illegal stone and sand looting will also be brought to justice.
Alfu had also publicly opposed student protesters during the July 2024 mass uprising.
Earlier, on October 24, 2014, a stone trader named Abdul Ali (35) was shot dead in Companiganj. His younger brother, Abdul Haque, filed a case with Companiganj Police Station, naming Kazi Abdul Adud Alfu Miah as the prime accused along with several unidentified others.
Two other murder cases against him are currently under trial, police sources said.
