MADARIPUR, Nov 29, 2025 (BSS) - A schoolgirl was killed and another seriously injured on Friday evening when a speeding private car hit them near the Hobiganj bridge area under Bahadurpur union in Sadar upazila of the district.

The deceased was identified as Suraiya Kazi, 10, daughter of Delwar Kazi of the same union. The injured girl, Mim Kazi, 12, is the daughter of Mamun Kazi.

Witnesses said the two girls were crossing the road when a reckless private car ran them over, leaving Suraiya dead on the spot and injuring Mim.

Following the accident, agitated locals set the private car on fire and handed over one of the co-passengers to the police. However, three others managed to flee.

Local residents alleged that the car's driver and passengers were teenagers and appeared to be under the influence of drugs. They claimed reckless speed and irresponsible driving caused the tragic incident.

Officer-in-Charge Adil Hossain of Madaripur Sadar Police Station told BSS that police rushed to the scene immediately after receiving information and brought the situation under control.

"Locals caught one person from the car and handed him over to us. Necessary steps are being taken to identify the others who fled and bring them under the law," he said.

The OC added that the body of Suraiya has been handed over to her family, while injured Mim is undergoing treatment at Madaripur Sadar Hospital.

Police said efforts are underway to identify the car's owner, the driver and the absconding passengers by reviewing CCTV footage and collecting information from locals. They are also speaking to eyewitnesses to verify details of the incident.
