MUNSHIGANJ, Dec 11, 2025 (BSS) - Detective Branch (DB) of Police have arrested five members of a robbery gang and recovered a large haul of gold ornaments, cash, police uniforms and walkie-talkies following the abduction and robbery of two gold traders on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway on December 8.

The arrestees are Md. Zakir Hossain, 38, Md. Akhtaruzzaman Munshi, 43, Md. Ramzan, 35, Md. Ramzan Ali, 40, and Md. Ismail Hossain, 50. Police said the men hail from different districts including Natore, Cumilla, Madaripur, Manikganj and Noakhali.

The arrest stems from an incident in December, when gold traders Bijoy Das and Ajay Das were abducted from a passenger bus in the Gazaria area and robbed of 145 bhori of gold, said Superintendent of Police Md. Menhazul Alam on Wednesday night.

A case was later filed at Gazaria Police Station in this connection.

DB police conducted separate drives in Dhaka, first arresting Zakir Hossain with 10 bhori of gold and Taka 7 lakh obtained from selling part of the stolen gold. Based on his confessional statements during interrogation, the remaining gang members were arrested from different locations in the capital.

In total, law enforcers recovered 94.14 bhori of gold ornaments, Taka 1.35 lakh from the sale of gold, two handcuffs, two walkie-talkies, three sets of police uniforms, and seven mobile phones from arrestees. The microbus used in the robbery was also seized.
DB Officer-in-Charge Inspector Md. Istiak Ashfaq Russell said the accused have been produced before the court and placed on a three-day remand for further interrogation.

Police say efforts are ongoing to trace any additional accomplices and recover the remaining stolen gold.
