RAJSHAHI, Feb 5, 2026 (BSS)- With the theme “Knowledge Brings Liberation, the Foundation of the Future,” the National Library Day was inaugurated at the premises of the Rajshahi Divisional Government Public Library.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Tuktuk Talukdar inaugurated the day’s programmes through the release of balloons and festoons.

Following the inauguration, a colorful rally was brought out from the library premises. The rally paraded through the city’s important roads and concluded at the same venue.

Later, a discussion meeting along with prize and certificate distribution was held at the auditorium of the Divisional Government Public Library to mark the occasion.

Speaking as the chief guest at the meeting, Tuktuk Talukdar said that in the present time people are no longer accustomed to holding books in their hands, and libraries are facing a severe shortage of readers.

There was a time when libraries used to be full of readers, but now, due to the lack of readers, many libraries are deteriorating.

A library needs readers, which is currently missing. The present young generation does read books, but mostly by downloading PDFs on mobile phones, listening to audiobooks, or using other digital platforms.

Although they are gaining knowledge, they are missing the feel and fragrance of both old and new books, which no longer touch or connect with the heart.

She added that humanity and values are gradually fading from society, and one possible reason is that people are moving away from books and the habit of reading.

The connection and bond with books must be restored.
The practice of gifting books to friends and loved ones on various occasions should also make a comeback. If we bring books closer to our lives, our knowledge will increase, and we will become more humane individuals.

The program was presided over by Md. Rokonuzzaman, Senior Librarian of the Rajshahi Government Public Library.
Special guests included Mahbubul Alam, Librarian of RUET, and Zillur Rahman, Librarian of Rajshahi Medical College.

At the end of the program, prizes and certificates were distributed among the winners of various competitions.
