Spice mill, restaurant fined Tk 2.05 lakh in Cumilla

CUMILLA, March 11, 2026 (BSS) - The National Consumer Rights Protection Department has fined two establishments a total of Taka 2.05 lakh during a market surveillance drive in Cumilla Sadar upazila aimed at preventing the production and sale of adulterated and unhygienic food products during the holy month of Ramadan and the upcoming Eid.

According to officials, the raid was conducted from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm on Wednesday in Bakhrabad and Kuchaitoli areas.

During the operation, authorities inspected a spice mill in Bakhrabad where they found a large quantity of spoiled and insect-infested peppers being mixed with good quality peppers before being ground into powder. Officials also discovered that pepper and turmeric were being stored and crushed on a dirty floor in an extremely unhygienic environment.

Following these findings, Al-Amin Food Grain Spice Mill was fined Taka 2 lakh under the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009.

In the same drive, a restaurant named Bakhrabad Matir Hadi was fined Taka 5,000 for storing stale yeast and preparing food in an unhygienic environment.

The operation was led by Md. Kausar Mia, Assistant Director of the Cumilla District Office of the Department of Consumer Rights Protection. District Safe Food Officer Md. Jewel Mia, Sample Collector Md. Nazmus Shakib and Office Assistant Farida Yasmin were present during the drive. A team from the district police provided overall support.

Assistant Director Md. Kausar Mia said that such drives will continue regularly to prevent the production and sale of adulterated and unhealthy food in local markets.
