RAJSHAHI, Mar 14, 2026 (BSS) – Researchers and social watchdogs at a rally here today called for protecting existing rivers and wetlands from further degradation, highlighting their role as lifelines for biodiversity and the ecosystem.

The event, titled “Save Rivers, Save Life, Save Bangladesh,” demanded an end to river encroachment and pollution nationwide, including in the drought-prone Barind region, and stressed ensuring the natural flow of rivers. 

Participants also warned against labeling rivers as “canals” under ongoing excavation programs, noting that such practices would distort river identities and accelerate degradation.

The rally was jointly organized by Rajshahi Green Coalition, Barind Youth Forum, and the Barind Multipurpose Development Research Centre (BARCIK) at Bargachhi village under Paba upazila. 

Rahima Khatun, President of Paba Upazila Green Coalition, chaired the event, which was addressed by BARCIK Regional Coordinator Shahidul Islam, Director of Bogra Rural Development Academy Sheikh Mehdi Mohammad, Mahbub Siddiqui, Nur Mohammad, and Barind Youth Forum President Atikur Rahman.

The rally called for immediate measures to manage waste in Rajshahi city and stop the discharge of untreated effluents into rivers and wetlands. It stressed the need for protecting and conserving water bodies in the Barind region and ensuring proper excavation of rivers and canals. 

Participants also urged making Effluent Treatment Plants mandatory for all industries, hospitals, and commercial institutions, with strict monitoring and legal action against polluters. They demanded the disconnection of direct drainage links to rivers, formation of an independent committee to identify pollution sources, and publication of transparent reports. 

Testing of water and soil quality of Sapmara, Bogmari, Bhugroil, Paikor, Borobaria, and other wetlands and rivers, along with regular environmental monitoring, was also emphasized to safeguard public health and agriculture. 

The speakers further called for stopping the encroachment and filling of rivers and wetlands and implementing an integrated restoration master plan involving local communities, youth, environmental organizations, and experts.
