JHENAIDAH, May 2, 2026 (BSS) - The body of Nazrul Islam (32), a Bangladeshi expatriate from Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah who was killed in Malaysia, was brought back to his home village and laid to rest today.
The body reached Gobordanga village in Kaliganj early this morning, 18 days after the killing.
A pall of grief descended on the village as mourners gathered. He was buried at the family graveyard.
Earlier, the body arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka late Friday night on a Malaysia Airlines flight. After completion of legal formalities, the body was handed over to family members around 4:00 am. At that time, the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment provided a cheque of Tk 35,000 in the name of Nazrul's mother to assist with burial expenses.
Family members said Nazrul Islam was hacked to death over a business dispute in Malaysia, and his body was later burned by the assailants. Another Bangladeshi, Kohinur Begum, was also killed in the same incident. Nazrul was the son of Motaleb Hossain of Gobordanga village in Kaliganj upazila.
The killing took place on the night of April 14 in Malaysia. Nazrul had gone to Malaysia in 2018 in search of a better life.
His death and the return of his body have cast a shadow of mourning across the village, with family members and locals grieving deeply.
According to the family, Nazrul had established an integrated farm in Malaysia, where he raised cattle, goats, poultry, and other animals. They alleged that local business partners, envious of his success, planned and carried out the killing.
Nazrul's brother Zahir Uddin said there had been ongoing disputes with business partners and that attempts had previously been made on his life. "He was planning to return home permanently soon, but was killed before he could do so," he said.
Officer-in-Charge of Kaliganj Police Station Jellal Hossain said they have no direct information as the incident occurred abroad.
He added that Nazrul's father has appealed to the Bangladesh government for justice, and the relevant authorities will take necessary steps. No formal complaint has yet been filed with the police, he said.
