Re-excavation of Bindai, Parulia canals in Gazipur begins

GAZIPUR, May 2, 2026 (BSS) - Re-excavation works of the Parulia Canal in Sreepur upazila and the Bindai Canal in the Rajendrapur area of the district began today.

Gazipur-3 constituency parliament member Prof. Dr SM Rafiqul Islam Bacchu inaugurated the canal re-excavation activities this morning.

Among others, Sreepur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Nahid Bhuiyan, Upazila BNP convener Abdul Motaleb and Chairman of Sreepur UCCA SM Mahful Hasan Hannan were present at the inaugural ceremony.

Sreepur Upazila Project Implementation Officer Ishtiaq Hossain Ujjal said the re-excavation of the two canals is being carried out under the UGPP programme of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief as part of implementing the Prime Minister's commitment.

He said an estimated Tk 1,80,15,458 has been allocated for re-excavation of a 3.5-kilometre stretch of the Parulia Canal in Rajabari union of Sreepur upazila. 

On the other hand, Tk 1,28,65,020 has been allocated for re-excavation works of a 2.40-kilometre stretch of the Bindai Canal in the Rajendrapur area.

The re-excavation of the canals is expected to positively impact on reducing waterlogging, increasing agricultural production, and maintaining environmental balance in the area.
