
MANIKGANJ, June 4, 2026 (BSS) - Jute cultivation exceeded its fixed target in all seven upazilas in the district during the current season.
The Department of Agriculture Extension sources said cultivation of Jute on 4530 hectares of land with a production target of 13,473 metric tons of jute during the current season. But the Jute was cultivated in 4576 hectares of land exceeding the fixed target in the district, with a production target of 13,476 metric tons or 67, 380 bales of jute fiber.
Of the total 3755 hectares of land was fixed for cultivation of Tosha, 798 hectares of land for local varieties, 18 hectares of land for Mesta and 5 hectares of land for Kenaf, the sources said.
The cultivators' sources said a timely supply of quality seeds, fertilizers and others agri inputs was the main cause of exceeding the fixed target in the district. Besides, the cultivators are getting reasonable prices for their products.
One of the Jute cultivators, Ahmad Ali of village Char Gobindopur under Singair Upazila, said that Jute still is the main cash crop in the district, so the Jute cultivators are interested in cultivating Jute, adding that the sticks of Jute are used for fencing and as fire wood also and it has a great demand in the rural areas.
Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Mohammad Shah Jahan Shiraj said that for the reasonable prices of the Jute, the cultivators are interested in cultivating the Jute as it ismain Cash crop in the district.
The Department of Agriculture Extension sources said most of the Jute is cultivated in the Singair Upazila in the district. The soil of the Singair Upazila is suitable for Jute cultivation.
