NARSINGDI, June 27, 2026 (BSS)- A disabled family with six disabled members of Puberchar village under Mirzapur Union in Raipura upazila of the district has received a newly-built house from a local volunteer organisation.

Raipura Upazila Swechchhasebi Forum formally handed over the house to the family on Saturday.

A visually impaired elderly woman, Harecha Begum, 70, who had long been living in a dilapidated tin-shed house with six disabled members of her
family in the upazila received the house and expressed her gratitude to the local volunteers who worked at the Forum.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Masud Rana attended the handover ceremony as the chief guest with Forum President Sirajul Islam Salam in the chair.

On the occasion, Pro-Vice Chancellor (VC) of ZH University of Science and Technology Professor Dr. Jasim Uddin, Additional Director of Bangladesh Bank
Asadul Haque, Upazila Social Services Officer Khalilur Rahman Sarkar, AVP of BRAC Bank Bhairab Branch Ziaul Haque, local public representatives and distinguished citizens were present as special guests.

According to local sources, the family plunged into severe hardship after Harecha Begum's husband, Fajr Ali, died about 20 years ago. She now lives
with her blind daughter Suraiya Begum, physically disabled son-in-law Maram Ali, and three visually impaired grandchildren. All six members of the family are living with different forms of disabilities.

Harecha Begum said they had been suffering immensely during storms and heavy rain due to their unsafe house. Expressing relief after receiving the new home, she thanked all those who extended support to them.

President of the Forum Salam said many individuals came forward with financial assistance after media reports highlighted the family's plight.

With contributions from well-wishers, the organisation constructed the house at a cost of over Taka 100,000 and handed it over to the family within a
short time, he added.

Upazila Social Services Officer Khalilur Rahman Sarkar said the district and upazila social services departments visited the family. He said initiatives
have been taken to provide government support, including a dairy cow and other assistance.

UNO Md. Masud Rana said humanitarian initiatives by social organisations and volunteers, alongside government efforts, are highly commendable. The
administration would continue providing necessary support to the family, he added.
