CHATTOGRAM, Aug 18, 2026 (BSS) – A special "Women's Bus Service" has been launched in Chattogram city with two buses to ensure safe, comfortable and passenger-friendly public transport for women.

The two buses will run from the Kalurghat Betar Kendra area through Free Port to Patenga, with 12 designated stops along the route where women passengers can board and alight. Both buses will be operated entirely by women drivers and conductors.

The special service was inaugurated this noon with a balloon-release ceremony at the Kalurghat Betar Kendra area of the city.

Speaking as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony, Member of Parliament (MP) Ershad Ullah said introducing a dedicated bus service for women was one of the commitments of the present government.

He noted that all drivers and helpers on the buses are women and thanked the PM on behalf of Chattogram people.

He added that the government hopes the initiative will ensure women to travel comfortably and safely on roads.

The double-decker bus has 75 seats, while the other bus has 45 seats. The double-decker will be staffed by one woman driver and two conductors, while the other bus will have one driver and one conductor.

Officials said the main objective of the service is to create safe and comfortable public transport options for working women, students and women from various professions.

The initiative is also creating employment opportunities for women in the transport sector through appointment of female drivers and assistants.

Although the service is starting with just two buses, officials said its scope may be expanded in the future based on passenger demand and operational experience.

Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Ziauddin, DC Zahidul Islam Mia, DIG Abdul Quddus Chowdhury, SP Masud Alam, Divisional Director of BRTA Masud Alam and others were present at the inaugural event.
