CHATTOGRAM, Aug 18, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Navy and Fire Service and Civil Defence today conducted a joint Situational Training Exercise (STX) on chemical disaster response at BNS Issa Khan to enhance the operational capabilities and preparedness of Chemical Disaster Response Teams (CDRTs).
The exercise was organised by the Bangladesh Navy in cooperation with Fire Service and Civil Defence, said an ISPR press release tonight.
A total of 455 Navy personnel and 41 members of Agrabad Fire Service and Civil Defence participated in the drill.
The exercise was aimed at strengthening the skills of relevant agencies in responding effectively to chemical emergencies.
The Bangladesh National Authority for the Chemical Weapons Convention (BNACWC) regularly organises the Basic Assistance and Protection Course for Responders (BAPCOR) as part of these preparedness efforts.
During the exercise, participants practised securing accident sites, controlling hazardous areas, preventing the spread of chemicals, rescuing affected and endangered people, providing first aid and evacuating victims to safe locations.
They also carried out firefighting operations and practised damage assessment, responder safety measures and the continuation of emergency services.
The participating agencies conducted coordinated response activities through effective communication, clear distribution of responsibilities and joint decision-making in a simulated chemical emergency.
The exercise is expected to strengthen inter-agency coordination and rapid response capabilities, particularly in dealing with potential chemical accidents and fires at ports, ships, industrial establishments and other key installations, the release said.
Regular training and joint exercises will help minimise casualties and damage to property and the environment while enhancing the security of vital economic and strategic installations and strengthening the country's overall disaster response capacity, the ISPR added.
