GAZIPUR, Aug 31, 2026 (BSS) - A 50-year-old woman garment worker, Mariam Begum, was killed in a road accident in the Itahata area on the Tangail Road under Gazipur City Corporation today. 

Following the accident, angry locals set fire on a bus causing vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway to remain suspended for some time.

The deceased, Mariam Begum, was the daughter of Osman Ali of the Ashulia area of Dhaka. She worked as a garment worker at the local Diganta Sweater Factory.

Police said Mariam was crossing the Dhaka-Tangail Highway this morning while on her way to the factory. 

At that time, a Takwa Paribahan bus ran her over and sped away. Locals rescued her in critical condition and took her to a hospital. Later, as her condition deteriorated, she died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

When news of Mariam's death reached the factory, tension spread among her colleagues. The workers took to the highway and began protesting. At one point, they set fire on another Takwa Paribahan bus. The fire completely burned the interior of the bus.

After receiving the information, police and two Fire Service units arrived at the scene and began extinguishing the fire.
 
The blaze was brought under control after about half an hour of efforts. During this time, traffic on the highway remained suspended for some time. 

Later, after the damaged bus was removed from the road, vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway returned to normal around 2:30 pm.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Basan Police Station Harun-or-Rashid confirmed it saying legal action would be taken in connection with the accident.
