Sunamganj-4 independent candidate Zakerin pledges extortion-discrimination-free society

SUNAMGANJ, Feb 1,  2026 (BSS) - Independent candidate for Sunamganj-4 constituency Dewan Zainul Zakerin has pledged to build an extortion and discrimination free society, if people elect him for the seat.

The Sunamganj-4 constituency comprises of Sunamganj Sadar and Bishwambharpur upazila.
In an interview with BSS correspondent Muhammad Aminul Haque, Zakerin has expressed hope to further strengthen communal harmony in the area and ensure overall development of the district. 

A great-grandson of mystic poet Hasan Raja, Dewan Zainul Zakerin is a former senior vice-president of the district BNP. 

He served four terms as chairman of Sunamganj Sadar Upazila Parishad and one term as chairman of Sunamganj Municipality. He also contested the 2001 parliamentary election from Sunamganj-3 constituency (Jagannathpur and Shantiganj) with the BNP’s paddy sheaf symbol.

In response to a question on his electoral pledges, Zakerin said he has long been closely involved with the people of Sunamganj Sadar and Bishwambharpurupazilas and feels indebted to them.
 
He said, “If people elect him, he would ensure education, healthcare, employment and equitable distribution of resources in the constituency.”

Regarding compliance with the electoral code of conduct, he said he believes in strictly following election rules and has instructed his supporters to do the same.

On the implementation of July Charter referendum, Zakerin said he has been involved with BNP politics since its inception and actively participated in anti-autocracy movements. “July Charter is a significant chapter for the state, I and my supporters are working in favor of “yes” vote in the national interest,” he added. 

Sharing his expectations for the upcoming parliamentary election, Zakerin said he believes the next parliament will be a transformative one for Bangladesh and will implement the July Charter. 

He said he joined the election with the trust and confidence of the people of Sunamganj and Bishwambharpur and vowed to stand by them and work for them for the rest of his life.

The Sunamganj-4 constituency has a total of 341,833 voters, including 173,368 men, 168,463 women and two third-gender voters.

Other candidates in the constituency include Advocate Mohammad Shams Uddin, Nayeb-e-Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami district unit, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh nominee Maulana Shahidul Islam Palashi, the party’s district president.
