Tangail, Feb 3, 2026 (BSS)- Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for Tangail-8 constituency in the 13th national elections Md Shafiqul Islam Khan has said if elected, he would like to ensure health services in the two upazilas first.
He said he would take various steps for the development of Basail and Sakhipur.
Shafiqul Islam Khan has shared his thoughts regarding the upcoming election in an interview with BSS Tangail district correspondent Mohiuddin Suman.
BSS: What is your election promises for the voters of your area?
Shafiqul Islam Khan: Basail and Sakhipur upazilas are far behind in terms of development compared to other upazilas of Tangail. If elected, I would like to ensure healthcare services in these two upazilas first. I want to upgrade the current health complex in Basail upazila to 100- bed facility. In addition, due to the low-lying upazila, many crop lands and houses are submerged during the flood season. Therefore, I want to ensure river governance to prevent riverbank erosion.
On the other hand, if I win, I want to stop the violence and harassment of ordinary people by the forest department of Sakhipur upazila. I also want to expand education, develop roads, bridges, culverts, healthcare and infrastructure in these two upazilas. I also want to protect the youth from drugs and provide them with employment. I want to turn them into assets instead of making them burden on society.
BSS: What are your instructions to leaders and workers to follow the electoral code of conduct?
Shafiqul Islam Khan: So far, a fair environment has prevailed in my constituency. I and my leaders and workers have been instructed to follow the code of conduct. However, the administration needs to increase surveillance to maintain a fair environment for the election.
BSS: What is your position on the referendum on the July Charter?
Shafiqul Islam Khan: In addition to conducting campaign in favour of party symbol, we are also campaigning for a 'Yes' vote in the referendum to implement the July Charter. We have to retain the freedom we got in exchange for the lives of 2,000 people through the student movement in 2024. We have to make 'Yes vote' win for reforms and changes. We are conveying this message to the general voters.
BSS: What are your expectations in the upcoming elections?
Shafiqul Islam Khan: Voters will vote in favour of peace and change in the upcoming elections on February 12. This time, voters will vote for candidates, who will protect the country's independence and sovereignty and are free from corruption. They will choose Jamaat as an ideological organisation of the people of Basail and Sakhipur.
