SANGSAD BHABAN, April 27, 2026 (BSS) – Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, today said that the renaming and decoration of the Parliament building entrance and galleries in honour of valiant freedom fighters have made the nation proud.
“The War of Independence is the pride of the nation. Commander-in-Chief of the Bangladesh Armed Forces and the Mukti Bahini during the 1971 Liberation War, General Muhammad Ataul Gani Osmani, Bir Uttam, was a son of the soil. The initiative to rename the Parliament entrance and galleries after him and seven other war veterans has made the nation proud,” said the Speaker.
The Speaker made these comments while BNP lawmaker Jainul Abedin Faruque of Noakhali-2 expressed his gratitude in the House under a point of order at the Jatiya Sangsad. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, chaired the session.
Expressing his gratitude for the initiative, the lawmaker said, “I feel proud when we see the portraits of seven war veterans, including Supreme Commander of the Liberation War General MAG Osmani, displayed inside the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. It has made the Parliament a heritage site.”
Taking the floor, Chief Whip Nurul Islam said the initiative has been taken under the directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
A commemorative plaque naming the main entrance of the Parliament building as “Gen MAG Osmani Gate” has been installed. The large maroon signboard, featuring the name in white lettering, now marks the primary access point used by Members of Parliament.
Gen Muhammad Ataul Gani Osmani served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Bangladesh Armed Forces and the Mukti Bahini during the 1971 Liberation War. He was appointed to the role by the provisional government formed on April 11, 1971, and was later promoted to the rank of general after independence.
In addition, seven galleries of the Jatiya Sangsad have been renamed after the seven Bir Sreshthas, the nation’s highest military gallantry award recipients, in recognition of their outstanding contributions during the Liberation War.
With the new naming, the galleries are now directly linked to the country’s history of independence, making the legacy of heroism and sacrifice more visible within the Parliament premises.
The renamed galleries are: Gallery-3, after Bir Sreshtha Lance Naik Munshi Abdur Rouf (previously Shimul); Gallery-4, after Bir Sreshtha Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman (previously Shiuli); Gallery-5, after Bir Sreshtha Engine Room Artificer Mohammad Ruhul Amin (previously Bokul); Gallery-6, after Bir Sreshtha Lance Naik Nur Mohammad Sheikh (previously Shapla); and Gallery-7, after Bir Sreshtha Sepoy Muhammad Mustafa Kamal (previously Jamuna).
VIP Gallery-1 has been named after Bir Sreshtha Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir (previously Padma), while VIP Gallery-2 has been renamed after Bir Sreshtha Sepoy Hamidur Rahman (previously Meghna). Galleries 1 and 2 have been reserved for journalists.
“The move reflects the spirit of the Liberation War and honours the nation’s highest gallantry award recipients,” said Chief Whip Nurul Islam.
He also said the main gate of the Parliament has been named after General Muhammad Ataul Gani Osmani.
