DHAKA, Aug 4, 2025 (BSS) - A Dhaka court today sentenced one Mirza Sakhawat
Hossain to death for killing his wife over dowry in the capital's Mohammadpur
area in 2023.

Judge Mst Kamrunnahar Begum of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention
Tribunal-6 delivered the verdict in the presence of the convict and ordered
him to be sent back to jail with a conviction warrant, court clerk Saiful
Islam confirmed to BSS.

According to the case documents, Sakhawat married Fatema Nasrin in 2004, and
the couple had a daughter. Over the years, Sakhawat persistently pressured
Nasrin to sell her paternal property in Thakurgaon and give him the proceeds.
When she refused, he reportedly subjected her to continuous mental and
physical torture.

Fatema Nasrin had earlier filed an assault case against Sakhawat, leading to
his arrest. However, after securing bail, he resumed his abuse.

On March 8, 2023, during an altercation at their residence on Humayun Road in
Mohammadpur, Sakhawat brutally attacked his wife, hacking her with a kitchen
knife and hitting her with a wooden pestle used for grinding spices. Fatally
injured, Nasrin, 45, later died in the hospital.

Her elder sister, Arjina Begum, 52, filed a murder case with Adabor Police
Station. Police submitted the charge sheet on August 18, 2023.

The tribunal pronounced the judgment today after examining testimonies from
17 witnesses over multiple hearings.
