FARIDPUR, Aug 11, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment for burning his wife to death in Sadar upazila in 2011.

Judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Shamima Parveen delivered the verdict at 1 pm in presence of the convict, said Golam Rabbani Bhuiyan Ratan, public prosecutor (PP) of the court.

The court also fined convict Royal Mondal, 46, Taka 50,000, in default, to suffer three-year more in jail.

According to the prosecution, on the afternoon of February 16, 2011, convict Royal poured petrol all over his wife's body and set her on fire for dowry.

Locals rescued and took her to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital. Later, she died on the way to Dhaka that night. 

Rahim Khan, father of the deceased, filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station in this connection. 

The judge after examining witnesses and evidence found the convict guilty and handed down the punishment, the PP added.

The court also acquitted three people as the charges brought against them were not proven.
