UP chairman jailed for seven years for acquiring illegal wealth

CHATTOGRAM, April 16, 2026 (BSS) - A court here has sentenced the UP chairman of Banshkhali upazila to seven years’ imprisonment for acquiring assets inconsistent with his known sources of income.

The verdict was delivered by the court of Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Mizanur Rahman today. The convict, Mujibul Haque Chowdhury, is a former chairman of Chambal Union Parishad No. 10 in Banshkhali.

According to the prosecution, Mujibul Haque Chowdhury was found guilty of acquiring and possessing assets worth Tk 56,71,140, which are inconsistent with his known sources of income. He has been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment and fined an equivalent amount under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.
