DHAKA, July 21, 2025 (BSS) - National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Dr. Ali Riaz today said the journey of moving forward being imbued with Liberation War and 2024 mass uprising, which are inextricably linked to the nation's existence, will continue, and there is no scope of ignoring these.
"There is no scope of ignoring the great Liberation War, 53 years of struggle and an incredible mass uprising taken place last year, bloodshed and loss of life. We have to move forward with these," he said.
Ali Riaz said these in his opening speech at the 16th day of the National Consensus Commission's discussion with political parties at Foreign Service Academy here.
"The Liberation War of Bangladesh is intertwined with our existence. The Liberation War is above all our successes and failures. We have achieved this state through a long struggle at the cost of the lives of millions of people," he said.
"We fell into a terrible fascism while the struggle to establish a democratic state system continued. From there, we came to this place through a struggle together. This is the background of the National Charter and we should keep that in mind," he said.
He requested the political parties to reach a consensus quickly, keeping these important issues in mind for the speedy preparation of the National Charter.
Ali Riaz said, "If we want to reach a consensus by the 31st July, which I consider an obligation, we have to take a quick decision within the next 10 days. We can take little more time for one or two issues. But some issues cannot be decided without reaching a decision".
"Since we have put in place the 'note of dissent' system from the beginning, anyone can disagree if they want and it will be mentioned in the national charter. Apart from this, you have entrusted a responsibility to the commission, whether a bicameral parliament will be formed or not, the commission will consider your opinion and inform you tomorrow or the day after tomorrow," he said.
Stating that today's discussion will begin on yesterday's unresolved issues, he said, after all kinds of discussions on the caretaker government yesterday, the commission found that most parties agree with the revised proposal given by the commission, and some may disagree on some issues.
Requesting to resolve the issues by consulting today, he said, "If we are informed, the commission will try to raise those issues again in tomorrow's meeting and come to a decision."
He expressed hope that a consensus can be reached quickly through sincere efforts of the political parties.
Commission members Safar Raj Hossain, Justice Emdadul Haque, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Dr. Ayub Mia and Chief Adviser's Special Assistant Manir Haidar were present in the meeting.
Representatives of 30 political parties including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizen Party (NCP), Gano Odhikar Parishad, Gana Sanghati Andolon, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Biplobi Workers Party and Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party are participating in today's discussion with commission.
