SIRAJGANJ, Feb 20, 2026 (BSS) - Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud today said the additional charges imposed on electricity during the tenure of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina will be withdrawn soon, adding that a committee has already been formed in this connection.

"Over the past 17 years, irregularities and large-scale financial mismanagement weakened the power sector, particularly through capacity charge payments, which he claimed benefited individuals close to the previous administration," he said at Sirajganj Central Jame Mosque this afternoon.

Iqbal Hasan Mahmud stressed that electricity is the key to national development and said the government is now working to rebuild the fragile power sector.

The minister also instructed the district administration to evict illegal footpath occupiers on SS Road in Sirajganj to stop extortion and ensure orderly business arrangements by relocating vendors to designated areas. He further directed authorities to take necessary measures to make Sirajganj town free from traffic congestion within seven days and to adopt strict steps to prevent local clashes and criminal activities.

He warned that extortionists and criminal elements, regardless of political affiliation, will be brought under the law.

Sirajganj Deputy Commissioner Aminul Islam and district BNP general secretary Saidur Rahman Bacchu, were present, present among others during the time.
