SIRAJGANJ, Feb 21, 2026 (BSS) – Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku today said that national development is possible only if the importance of the mother language is recognized and domestic nationalism is strengthened.

“Without valuing language, patriotism cannot be awakened, and no country can advance,” he told a discussion, cultural programme, and awards ceremony held this morning at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium in Sirajganj.

The events were organized by the district administration on the occasion of Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day-2026.

The minister said that whenever Bangladesh has overcome crises, the spirit of 1952 has been revived. “The Liberation War was waged in the spirit of 1952, and the people united to restore democracy. The awareness to preserve the dignity of the mother language has repeatedly strengthened the nation,” he added.

Emphasizing the role of language in fostering patriotism and ensuring desired development, the minister said that while foreign words have enriched the Bengali language, the new generation must pay greater attention to the mother tongue. He stressed proper usage and practice of the language for the country’s progress and development.

The minister also mentioned that an industrial park and industrial zone have been established along the Jamuna river in Sirajganj. To treat the waste from these industries, a central Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) is essential.

“Without proper measures, the Jamuna could be polluted, affecting agriculture and public health. I call on the administration to take necessary steps for environmental protection,” he added.

District Commissioner Aminul Islam presided over the programme, while former principal and linguist Prof. Karuna Rani Saha of Sirajganj Government College presented a paper on Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day.

Police Superintendent Md Saiful Islam Santu, Deputy Director of Local Government Kamrul Islam, Sirajganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry President and District BNP General Secretary Md Saidur Rahman Bacchu, and freedom fighter Azizur Rahman Dulal also addressed on the occasion.

Following the discussion, prizes were distributed among the winners of cultural competitions.
