DHAKA, April 25, 2026 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) today forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in the northern and adjoining regions of the country from this evening, raising concerns about temporary flooding in the northeast.

Low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj are particularly at risk of short-term flooding due to excessive rainfall and runoff from upstream regions.

Meteorologist Dr. Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik said deep convective clouds are forming over the northern areas, which may lead to sustained rainfall over the next 96 hours. He added that parts of Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions could experience heavy showers, causing temporary waterlogging in city areas.

According to Mashiur Rahman, Managing Director of the Bangladesh Weather Observation Team, a pre-monsoon rain band named "Jhumul" is approaching Bangladesh and may remain active until May 7. This system could bring widespread rain, thunderstorms and Kalbaishakhi storms across much of the country, with the heaviest rainfall expected in northeastern regions.

He noted that upstream areas such as Meghalaya, Assam and Cherrapunji may receive 500-700 mm of rainfall, increasing the risk of flash floods from hill runoff into Bangladesh. However, any flooding is expected to be short-lived as water levels may recede quickly.

Rainfall is likely to intensify from tonight and gradually spread across the country from April 28 or 29. Between April 29 and May 5, around 70-80 percent of the country may experience regular rain and thunderstorms, with only brief breaks.

Dismissing rumors circulating on social media, Mashiur Rahman said there is no possibility of temperatures rising to 45-57øC. Instead, increased rainfall is expected to lower temperatures in the coming days.
