DHAKA, June 25, 2026 (BSS) – Bangladesh has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing women's leadership in diplomacy and ensuring their full and meaningful participation in decision-making.

Marking the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam paid tribute to women diplomats who are "breaking barriers, building bridges and shaping the future of international relations."

In a message issued here last evening on the day, she said Bangladesh remains committed to promoting women's leadership in diplomacy and ensuring their full and meaningful participation at all levels of decision-making.

"Our women diplomats continue to make us proud through their exemplary service, professionalism and accomplishments on the global stage," the state minister said.

She called for collective efforts to ensure that women's voices, talents and leadership are fully represented in diplomacy, helping build a more just, equitable, inclusive and peaceful world.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh in Geneva conveyed its heartfelt greetings to women diplomats at home and abroad, describing them as key contributors to a more peaceful, inclusive and prosperous world.

In a separate message, the mission noted that despite steady progress, women's representation in diplomatic services continues to lag behind men, particularly in ambassadorial and other senior leadership positions.

It said women bring essential perspectives to diplomacy by bridging divides, building consensus and advancing solutions to global challenges, while their meaningful participation in decision-making strengthens institutions and promotes more effective and representative diplomacy.

The mission renewed its call for advancing gender equality, removing barriers and ensuring equal opportunities for women to lead and contribute at all levels of international affairs.

"Empowering women in diplomacy is not only a matter of equality; it is essential for building a stronger and more resilient future for all," the message said.

The United Nations General Assembly, at its 76th session, adopted a consensus resolution proclaiming June 24 as the International Day of Women in Diplomacy to recognize the vital role of women in shaping international relations and promoting peace and sustainable development.
