DHAKA, Oct 15, 2024 (BSS) - The World Food Day-2024 will be observed in the country tomorrow as elsewhere in the world with the theme 'Right to foods for a better life and a better future', emphasizing the need for universal access to diverse, nutritious, affordable and safe food.
First celebrated in 1979, World Food Day takes place annually on October 16 aimed at promoting awareness about hunger and action for the future food safety for people across the planet.
The Agriculture Ministry and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will jointly observe the day.
The world produces enough food to feed all its inhabitants, and food is recognised as the third most basic human necessity (after air and water) as well as a basic human right under the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights and two legally-binding international covenants.
The global community will observe the World Food Day uniting in the fight to ensure the right to food for all. In response to the ongoing challenges of food insecurity, malnutrition and climate change, this year's focus shifts towards championing the right to diverse, nutritious, affordable and safe foods for a better life and a brighter future.
To mark the day, the Agriculture Ministry has taken elaborate programmes, which include international seminar, mass awareness programme and publication of special supplements in mainstream newspapers. Posters, billboards, video messages and documentations also have been published highlighting the significance of the day.
A day long international seminar will be held at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) in the city tomorrow.
Agriculture Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) M Jahangir Alam Chowhdury will attend the programme as the chief guest.
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations representative in Bangladesh Dr Jiaoqun Shi and Secretary of the Ministry of Food M Masudul Hasan also will attend the function as the special guests.
