President urges journalists to play role in building 'new Bangladesh'

DHAKA, Jan 19 2025 (BSS) - President Mohammed Shahabuddin today called upon journalists to play an effective role in building a discrimination-free and democratic 'new Bangladesh', being imbued with the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War and the the July-August mass-uprising.

The Head of State also urged the journalists to perform their duties with utmost professionalism for the betterment of the country and its people.

The President made the call as the newly elected executive committee (EC) of Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) paid a courtesy call on him at the Bangabhaban here this afternoon.

Noting that the mass-media is the fourth pillar of the state as well as the mirror of the society, President Shahabuddin said, "You (journalists) have nothing to be advised . . . You are sensible enough. Perform your duties with utmost professionalism."

The President put emphasis on the effective role of mass-media in preventing the spread of rumours, misinformation, disinformation and distorted information and making the people aware of such activities.

Highlighting the glorious contribution of journalists to country's all democratic movements, including the Great Liberation War, he said the role of the journalists is very important in establishing justice and equality in society and upholding the human dignity of people.

He further urged the DRU leaders to ensure transparency and accountability in the administration of the state through objective critictisms and by pointing out the mistakes of the government.

Newly elected DRU President Abu Saleh Akon and General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohail led the 21-member DRU delegation.

During the meeting, the delegation highlighted the overall activities of DRU, seeking all-out cooperation in executing various programs undertaken for the welfare of journalists.

Military Secretary to the President, Major General Mohammad Adil Chowdhury, and Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam, among others, were present on the occasion.
