DHAKA, Jan 23, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today said the mass uprising of 1969 is a significant chapter in the history of Bangladesh.

"The mass uprising of 1969 is a significant chapter in the history of Bangladesh. We achieved the great independence through the Language Movement of 1952 and the Six-point Bengali Emancipation Proclamation and later the 11-point in continuation of the mass uprising of 1969. The armed War of Liberation also took place as a sequel," he said in a message on the occasion of the Mass Uprising Day to be observed tomorrow, recalling the 1969 mass movement in the then East Pakistan.

The entire month of January in 1969 was turbulent in the movement, the Chief Adviser said, adding that with the determination to overthrow the Pakistani military rule, the struggling people brought out a procession breaking the repression and curfew of the ruling class on January 24 in that year.

Matiur Rahman Mallik, a ninth-grade student of Nabakumar Institute in Dhaka and many others including Maqbul, Anwar, Rustom, Milon and Alamgir embraced martyrdom in the police firing during the procession, said Yunus.

"The mass uprising of 1969 against misrule and exploitation still inspires us," he added.

Marking the day, the Chief Adviser paid glowing tributes to the martyrs.

It is the responsibility of everyone, including the interim government that came into being recently as a result of the mass uprising of students, workers, and the public, to remain respectful of the values of 1969 in building a democratic social system, he said.
